the early music company

In 1983 Clifford and Elaine Bartlett founded King’s Music, a new venture in publishing facsimile editions of early music. Clifford soon produced his own editions, beginning with Purcell and Monteverdi. In 2008, King’s Music became The Early Music Company, and the catalogue to date numbers well over a thousand titles.

Brian joined King’s Music after graduating and the partnership which lasted until Clifford’s sad death in 2019. Elaine and Brian have continued to produce further editions, and the extensive catalogue which has built up over nearly forty years is now being made available on this website.

Brian also negotiates for permissions and fees for staged opera performances.

He has already reset Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Blow’s Venus and Adonis, and the new typesetting of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo will be used for the first time in 2022.

Commissions for new editions are also welcomed.
