Written for the 1740 funeral of the dowager Duchess of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg, Magdalena Augusta (who was born a princess in nearby Anhalt-Zerbst), this eight-movement cantata features prominent woodwind instruments. The opening features a solo bassoon, while one of the three duets spotlights two "grand oboes". The opening words from Psalm 37 were chosen by the duchess herself, and they provided the focus for the many sermons delivered on the day of the funeral ceremony.
