Originally published by King's Music in 1996, Michael's step-by-step guide to accompanying from a figured bass line works through a series of original vocal and instrumental pieces by well-known composers. There are five broad sections: root position chords (the essence of all Western harmony), first inversion chords (where the third of the chord is the bass note), basic cadential patterns (introducing the concept of suspensions), chords with a fourth note (sevenths and their inversions) and finally other kinds of suspensions. Full of worked-out examples and explanatory notes, this is a great introduction to what many consider a mysterious art way beyond their abilities but which, like everything else, is actually just a case of banishing your fears (you won't break anything by playing the wrong chord!) and practising until the figures and their implications become familiar.
