Requiem

This intimate performance by Il Concerto Barocco gives a near-perfect impression of how I imagine the composer intended it to sound.
Too bad the video only includes the opening few sections.

The first non-Italian Kapellmeister in Vienna, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer is best known nowadays for his virtuosic violin music and his large-scale sonatas. His church music is sadly neglected: this intimate setting of the Requiem text reveals a composer not only with a great melodic gift and total command of harmony, but also one capable of moving his listeners. The very opening is a real tear-jerker. The piece may have been written for one of the Holy Roman Emperors, or it may, in fact, be the Requiem he is known to have written for his father.

This set of slightly odd dances and character pieces is typical of 17th-century Austrian chamber music. Even the opening with its long gaps might suggest its suitability for choreography?

Sonata Per 5 a Camera

This humorous piece "al giorno delle Correggie" sees the bassoon supplying some unlikely sounds, as the band represent festivities during the "day of the bean feast"...

This short work is in three sections and showcases a violinist above a consort of five "violas" and continuo - although one of the surviving parts says "bracc[ia]", the piece will be equally successful with viols.

This is one of Schmelzer's most jolly pieces. The interplay between two groups of high and low recorders throughout the sonata's three sections, and the clever alternation between counterpoint and chordal writing show a composer at his peak.
